FAQs

Medium & Materials:

  • As of 2026 my painting process is either oil, acrylic, or a mix. Generally larger works are oil over acrylic gesso and smaller works are a mix with some being entirely acrylic. The medium will always be listed in the description of each piece.
  • Paints, pigments, and mediums are archival, premium quality, and maintain excellent lightfastness with the sole exception of the brightest neon pinks, which were primarily used in 2023, and which are somewhat fugitive by their nature. This can be partially mitigated by keeping them out of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as well as by the UV-resistant varnish noted in the next point.
  • Paintings are protected with an archival but flexible and repairable UV-resistant varnish which helps to preserve the aforementioned neon pigments as well as the already lightfast pigments now exclusively being used.
  • Most works on panel are on masonite, some are birch.
  • Canvases are predominantly stretched by hand unless indicated. Canvas works are medium weight 100% cotton canvas primed with white acrylic, linen works are on premium quality #13DP linen primed with white acrylic.
  • Many of the paints used in my work contain heavy metals. While the completed work is beneath a final layer of varnish and the metals are generally benign when dried, any cutting or sanding of the work may produce harmful heavy metal dust. Do not eat.
  • With the above in mind, my studio practice has been designed to minimize waste output— paints, mediums, and solvents are kept out of landfills and water supplies and are disposed exclusively via local household hazardous waste disposal drop off

Framing:

  • Pieces are hand-framed by me unless otherwise noted, and frames are made specifically for each piece. Exact style and materials will always be listed in the description
  • In 2026 I have introduced a polished concrete frame as the default frame for the following sizes: 5x7", 6x6", 8x8", 8x10". The material is a mix of cement, sand aggregate, and natural sisal fiber with an added integral color dye and polished by hand. The concrete frames are cast from handmade molds which were created using my wooden frames of the same dimensions, so the sizing is identical. However, the color and finish can vary slightly between pieces.
  • Wooden frames are handmade from hardwood, using prefab carved pieces for decorative patterned elements. Wood used is predominantly poplar, with occasional oak or pine on decorative sections.
  • The current primary wooden frame finish rolled out as part of 2025's To Hold Onto Light exhibition and continued thereafter is a poplar and pine base, sanded and rounded at the corners and then covered in a custom mixed 'terra cotta' colored acrylic paint to create an adobe-like effect. The exterior is then protected in a durable matte poly topcoat.
  • The secondary frame finish is poplar, finely sanded, dye stained to a deep brown (similar to walnut wood in appearance), and coated in an amber shellac finish. The front facing edge is coated in a gold metallic wax.
  • Pieces will have some type of hanging mechanism attached, but the length of the wire may vary between works of the same size or even among sets (triptychs, etc.)— so I'd recommend measuring before hanging if you're putting multiple works side by side
  • All pieces are available without frame at no extra charge.
  • Typically frames are modular and can be swapped between finishes, so if you'd prefer a specific frame style which isn't pictured on the listed piece, please feel free to reach out and we can talk about it!

Content & Format:

  • All works are signed with a small stylized signature on front and a full title, signature, and year completed on reverse. Certificate of authenticity available upon request.
  • As of 2026, naming convention is the following format:
[title] [numeral {resets monthly}], [month] [year]
So for instance, Cerro Pedernal II, June 2026 would be the second painting of Cerro Pedernal done in June of 2026.
Pre-2026 naming convention of works is based off of the location, series, and number of paintings, with a new series starting each year. There are some exceptions, but for instance, Sangre de Cristo Series 5, No.10, would reflect the tenth painting of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains done during the fifth year of painting that range.
  • Paintings are based on my own reference photos taken on travels throughout New Mexico and the Southwest
